Here’s some new that Amsterdam is banning tobacco use inside coffee shops.
clipped from www.tucsoncitizen.com

AMSTERDAM - Starting next week, you’ll still be able to legally smoke a joint in the famously relaxed coffee shops of Amsterdam - but for a cigarette, you’ll have to step outside.
A tobacco ban that goes into effect Tuesday in the Netherlands has both tourists and shop owners, like, totally confused, man.
“It’s crazy,” says Jon Foster, 36, an American who owns the popular Grey Area coffee shop in the gentrified Jordaan area of central Amsterdam. “It seems totally illogical to have a business that specializes in smoking and you ban tobacco.”
The new law prohibits smoking in bars, cafes, restaurants and clubs to protect people from secondhand tobacco smoke. It is similar to bans that have swept across Europe since Ireland made pubs smoke-free in 2004, as well as restrictions across the U.S.

Amsterdam tours and activities
Amsterdam is truly the home of the weird and wonderful in Europe attracting visitors from all walks of life. If you can see past the Red Light District and “Coffee Shops”, you will discover Amsterdam gets a little bit stranger as you turn each corner. Let’s start with the soon to be opened (November 2007) CORPUS, an experience center housed inside a giant human body where you will be able to learn about anatomy and physiology before ending your visit with a medical exam to tell you what’s wrong with you!

Here’s some cool facts about Netherlands!

Cheese market in Alkmaar
1. Holland and the Netherlands are not synonymous. Holland is just one section of the Netherlands, largely the western coastal region, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Leiden and the Hague. However, other famous Dutch cities like Utrecht, Groningen, Maastricht, Den Bosch and Leeuwarden are *not* in Holland.
2. The Dutch love sprinkles on toast. I’m talking the sprinkles kids put on ice cream, but Dutch adults put it on bread. For breakfast. It’s called “hagelslag”, and De Ruijter makes the best kinds. Another variant, “muisjes” - little mice - are candied anise seeds; also delicious on buttered toast. You can get either pink, female, or blue, male, varieties. I’m not joking.

Here’s a good write-up of things to do in Amsterdam.

Weekend bikeOne thing about Amsterdam that is slightly unusual compared to most other great European cities, is that you can have a meaningful visit in only two days. You certainly won’t be able to do everything, but you’ll be able to check out many of the major sites and you’ll be able to leave knowing that you got a good feeling for the place. Pretty much everything visitors are really interested in is located in the compact city center, and as long as the weather is decent and you have good shoes you can probably do it all on foot as well.
