Here’s some good explanations of what’s going on at Machu Picchu, Peru.
clipped from www.travel-wonders.com

The sacred district has the most significant and ma sites of the complex. Walking from the Temple of the Sun towards Huayna Picchu, you arrive at the Principal Temple (PT on the map). This three sided temple boasts some beautiful stonework (though some has subsided with earth movement) and an elegant stone altar. In this same area is the equally distinctive Three Windowed Temple (3W) with characteristic trapezoidal-shaped windows and superb stonework. Note the rock on the near side as part of the closest window has ten sides, yet fits neatly like the most perfectly formed jigsaw.

Here’s some great photos of Peru, one of the better ones I’ve seen in awhile.

Can countries be photogenic? Here’s why I ask: I love taking pictures, but certainly wouldn’t consider myself a good photographer by any means - I know nothing about lighting, shutter-speeds, or aperture settings and I usually just play with the buttons on my digital camera until the photos I take start looking nice on the display screen. Yet I was consistently able to take good photos during my trip to Peru. Subsequent trips revealed that it didn’t have anything to do with me, so the only way I can explain it is to point the finger at Peru itself. I’ve basically concluded that certain countries are just more photogenic than others - and that in the world of landscape and people photography Peru must be a reigning supermodel. Check out some of the amateur photos I took while visiting the country:

Because of the high altitudes in Peru, you might want to take some of this advice before you go.
clipped from www.machupicchu-inca.com
I know you are worried about this altitude sickness. You are thinking how far you can go up and how to acclimatize! You will find different people will suggest you differently. Even some people will say, ‘ nothing happened to me, so don’t believe these rumors.’  I remember when I was going to Machu Picchu some body told me not to climb 1000 ft a day to escape altitude sickness. Now Cusco is at an altitude of 11500 ft. I have to be in Cusco to reach Machu Picchu. And as I did not have much time I needed to reach Cusco by plane. If I move up only 1000 ft a day, then I have to wait 11 day before I reach Cusco. Which is not practical. Then there are lot of people who told me nothing happened to them, though they reach Cusco by plane, in few hours. So what to conclude from all these information above! Sorry don’t reach any decision yet. Get some information from below, then plan your journey.

Machu Picchu (Quechua: Machu Picchu, “Old mountain”) is a pre-Columbian Inca site located 2,400 meters (7,875 ft) above sea level[1]. It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, which is 80 km (50 mi) northwest of Cusco. Often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu is probably the most familiar symbol of the Inca Empire.

It was built around the year 1450, but abandoned a hundred years later, at the time of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Forgotten for centuries, the site was brought to worldwide attention in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, an American historian. Since then, Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction. It has recently come to light that the site may have been discovered and raided several years previously, in 1867 by a German businessman, Augusto Berns.[2] It was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
